After last year’s big success, we can’t wait to return to the shady gardens of E.F.E.O.! Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the busy old market area, move up-river and visit the exhibit at E.F.E.O. The E.F.E.O Center in Siem Reap Cambodia has been for over a century a major actor in the restoration of the Angkor monuments and the development of Khmer studies. It was in 1907 that the EFEO was charged with the inventorying and preservation of the Angkor Archaeological Park. It established a permanent branch named Angkor Conservation in order to safeguard the many temples scattered through some 400 km2 of forest until the Khmer Rouge took power in 1975. In 1992 the Cambodian government invited the EFEO to return to its former location in Siem Reap and reopen its Center there. Since then, many new research and restoration projects have been carried out in collaboration with APSARA, the Cambodian Organization responsible for managing the site, and within a system of international cooperation coordinated by UNESCO.

The 1961 describes itself as an artist retreat and creative space, and we couldn’t agree more. Thanks to the support of Loven Ramos, the friendly Filipino owner and artist, we will happily return to The 1961 this year with two selected exhibitions. The 1961 Hotel & Gallery, is a space where one can stay and immerse into a world of artists, poets, musicians and writers. Not only do they allow guests indulge in the artists’ worlds, but also encourage them to take part in the process of the creation of the room as a living art space. McDermott Gallery has been a highly regarded partner and valued supporter since the festival’s early days. The gallery near “old market”, once a historic shop house and located in a lively alleyway, is a firm favorite of many festival visitors and guests. We are happy to showcase two exhibitions of our 2013 Programme at McDermott Gallery. The Gallery first opened its doors at the FCC Angkor in 2004, exhibiting a definitive collection of photography of Angkor by John McDermott, as well as rotating exhibitions by Asian and international artists. The following years saw an explosion in creativity in Siem Reap, as international artists flocked to the town for inspiration and Cambodian artists reclaimed their artistic heritage, pursing new styles and themes. On the heels of this energy, a historic shop house in the “old market” area had been renovated and opened as a second gallery in 2006, with the broader mission of showcasing artwork focused on Cambodian and Asian themes. In fall of 2012, the flagship gallery at the Raffles Grand Hotel opened its doors.

Meet Shinta Mani, a new member of the Festival family. Although the brand may be new this year, the individuals behind it are long-term friends and supporters. For the first time, we will have Children’s Day, along with a special exhibition of the Anjali Photo Workshops, under the leafy shades of the Shinta Mani Club & Resort. Shinta Mani Club is an upscale boutique hotel, created by acclaimed architect Bill Bensley, showcasing contemporary designed rooms and public spaces in an Angkorian-inspired design. It’s sister property, Shinta Mani Resort, is a newly renovated boutique hotel across the road, and both properties are located in the leafy French Quarter, between the Royal Gardens and the Old Market area.
