SUMMARY:Afternoon Session: "Post-war Vietnamese Photography"
DESCRIPTION:[AFTERNOON SESSION]\n“Post-War Vietnamese Photography” Linh Pham & Ha Dao from Matca (Vietnam)\nPhotographers Ha Dao and Linh Pham from Matca.vn will present a talk about the trajectory of Vietnamese photography\, exploring how photojournalism saw its prime time during the Vietnam war\, how local photographers moved forward after independence\, and the current subjects and approaches pursued by young photographers. When Vietnam appears in Western media\, there is a tendency for it to be portrayed with the lens of war\, but that issue is actually no longer relevant to most local image makers (excluding the Vietnamese diaspora). \n[OPEN TO PUBLIC] \nAbout Matca Matca\, whose name means fisheye in Vietnamese\, is born solely out of our passion for and beliefs in photography as a form of narration and visual arts. We intend for Matca to be a collective\, an alternative gathering space for the Vietnamese photographic community to seek inspiration and bounce ideas off one another. At Matca we acknowledge and feature local photographers as well as visual artists out there whose compelling works are often overlooked in today’s society’s context.

SUMMARY:Projection Evening: Revival
DESCRIPTION:[EVENING PROJECTION]\n“REVIVAL”\nCurated by Neak Sophal and Kim Hak\nThis evening is curated by Cambodian photographers Neak Sophal & Kim Hak\, both of whom are alumni of the Angkor Photo Workshops and members of our new organising committee. They will present a selection of some of the most significant contemporary Khmer photography. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCURATORS’ STATEMENT \n\n\n\n\n\nThe end of Vietnam war in the 70s\, war had been extended on Cambodian land with the drop of B52 booms by American Air Force\, the unrest situation in the country during Lon Nol in 1970 to 1975 and the country had been under control of Khmer Rouge regime in 1975 to 1979. We have seen a lot of photographs which covered the unrest situation and darkness history of Cambodia history by foreigners. I have been always questioned: “Were there Cambodian photographers to cover the news?” And who are they? Some of them still survived? \nThis is still on our research … \nI was born after the fall of Khmer Rouge regime in the period of lost\, revival\, and rebuilt. Here\, Neak Sophal and myself\, we prefer not to call it a curation\, but the appreciation of looking at Cambodian photographers in the last four decades who have been using photography as form/ voice to express point of views to talk about different issues in this society. \nSome works are completed\, some works are on-going\, and some works are experimental. \n– Kim Hak

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: The Architect’s Brother
DESCRIPTION:[EXHIBITION OPENING]\nThe Architect’s Brother\nShana & Robert Parkeharrison (USA)\nFollowing Children’s Day\, do join us for an exhibition reception of Shana & Robert Parkeharrison’s work at One Eleven Gallery. \n\n“Our imagery appears timeless\, otherworldly and surreal. Employing a poetic visual language\, we layer our work with multi-meanings and interpretations. This work continues our twenty- year investigation of the triangular interaction of nature\, technology and human existence. \nAs collaborative artists we work within the tradition of tableau photography. We transform our prints using hands-on painterly techniques\, thus freeing our photographs from traditional conventions of photography. “ \n– Shana & Robert PARKEHARRISON
