Connecting the best visual journalism to a global audience.
The World Press Photo Foundation works to develop and promote quality visual journalism because people deserve to see their world and express themselves freely. Freedom of information, freedom of inquiry and freedom of speech are more important than ever, and quality visual journalism is essential for the accurate and independent reporting that makes these freedoms possible.
Based in Amsterdam, the World Press Photo Foundation organises a wide range of activities that span the globe.
2016 Photo Contest
The annual World Press Photo contest rewards photographers for the best single exposure pictures contributing to the past year of visual journalism. The pictures are judged in terms of their accurate, fair, and visually compelling insights about our world. Entrants accept the code of ethics and all winning photographs are verified as visual documents of the scene the photographer witnessed.
The contest is judged by a jury comprising leading photojournalism professionals. The membership of the jury changes every year, and is led by a chair and supported by a secretary who implements the rigorous judging procedures. The jury is independent of the World Press Photo Foundation, and it is the jury alone that chooses the winning pictures.
