In the age of universal mobile phone connectivity, Facebook, Twitter and Lonely Planet guides there are still a few countries which circumscribe independent tourism by way of strict laws and visa requirements. In the mountain kingdom of Bhutan, ‘The Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon’, a country of less than 800,000 people and which was largely isolated from the outside world until the end of the 20th century, the authorities insist that chaperoning of tourists promotes and maintains the peoples’ well being.
