The families of fishermen, inhabitants of El Morro or New Venice, live in a constant journey on the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta – looking for fish, chasing the trail of subsistence. This culture that came to live in the middle of the marsh built its houses on the water, looking for a place to dry the fish in the sun with salt. Today, the fishermen who live in this region are threatened by the ecosystem crisis affecting the lagoon system of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta. This is the result of illegal diversions of rivers that feed the Ciénaga, the drying up of waters that seek to expand land for grazing, the few or no connections with the sea, and the contamination of the Magdalena River.
