As part of the process to apply for the Visual Storytelling Workshop, all applicants have to upload a portfolio of work when they fill in their form.
This post is to help explain what a “portfolio” is, and to give you some tips on creating one for yourself!
What is a “portfolio”?
A “portfolio” is simply a collection of your work. So for example, if you are a photographer and you are creating a photography portfolio, you have to select a collection of your photographs and put them together.
A portfolio is used for many things. For example, you can use it to show when you apply for jobs or workshops, or if you can present it to other professionals to ask for their feedback about what you are doing. If you are looking for work as a photographer, clients will usually ask to see your portfolio first before they hire you.
Creating a portfolio is also a good way for you to reflect about your work, and who you want to be as a photographer.
How many photos should there be in a portfolio?
This is up to you and there is no fixed number. It should not be too few, as then it is difficult to really understand who you are as a photographer. It also should not be too many, as it is not as impactful. More is not always better! The recommended number is usually around 15 to 30 images.
(If you are applying for the workshops, we ask for your portfolio to have at least 10 and maximum 20 photos.)
But I have hundreds of photos! How do I choose what to include in my portfolio?
Choosing what to add to your portfolio is always the most difficult part. The first thing is to understand is that the portfolio will represent YOU.
Next, be clear about WHY you are making this portfolio. Is it to apply for the workshops? Or maybe you need to send it to a potential client who needs a photographer for an event? Photographers often have different portfolios ready for different purposes.
A common myth is that a portfolio shows all your “best” photographs. This is not always correct, and it depends on why you are creating your portfolio and who you want to see it.
To apply for the Visual Storytelling Workshops, we encourage you to instead select the photographs which you think best express who you are, and the kind of photographer you want to be. It can be a series (a story), but if you do not have one ready, you can submit singles (unconnected images).
